Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) occurs naturally in the body and is found in most human cells, primarily in the heart, liver, kidney and pancreas. It is stored in the mitochondria (‘powerhouse’) of our cells, where it’s involved in process that generates energy in order to carry out all of the body’s functions. It also has an important role to serve as an antioxidant which is required for the healthy functioning of cells. In certain people, it is difficult for their body to produce adequate amounts of CoQ10. One example is that older people seem to be more deficient in this compound because CoQ10 production decreases as you age. Cholesterol-lowering statins can also interfere with CoQ10 levels as it inhibits the production of it in the body.
